foot and hand reflexology

Reflexology in Columbus, Indiana

Foot and hand reflexology gives overworked areas focused attention while creating a deeply relaxing experience for the whole body.

Reflexology is based on the idea that specific points on the hands and feet correspond with different areas of the body. During your session, Shamani works slowly and deliberately across these points using focused pressure and touch.

The experience can help release everyday tension, encourage relaxation and quiet a busy mind. It is a small area of focus that can leave you feeling surprisingly refreshed from head to toe.

What Is Reflexology?

Reflexology is a form of focused bodywork centered primarily on the hands and feet. Pressing specific points on your feet and hands sends a soothing message to your brain, telling your body to lower its stress levels, improve blood circulation, and enter a state of deep relaxation. While it does not medically cure or diagnose illnesses, it helps the body rest so it can better restore its own natural balance.

What to Expect During Foot & Hand Reflexology

Your reflexology session is designed to be quiet, comfortable and unhurried. You remain clothed while Shamani focuses on the hands and feet, applying pressure gradually and deliberately rather than rushing from one area to another.

Pressure can be adjusted for your comfort. Some points may feel especially relaxing, while others may reveal areas where you are holding more tension than you realized.

There is nothing you need to do during the session. This is your time to settle in, disconnect for a little while and allow someone else to take care of the parts of your body that spend so much time taking care of you.

How does it feel?

Does reflexology hurt? No, it shouldn't hurt, it should feel like a deep, satisfying release of tension rather than sharp or painful pinching. If a part of your body is stressed, the matching spot on your foot might feel tender or bruised when pressed. Shamani will adjust the pressure so that it stays comfortable for you.

Most people feel deeply relaxed, calm, and sleepy after a session because the treatment releases a lot of built-up tension. Occasionally, people experience a mild healing response like a slight headache, thirst, or needing to use the restroom more often. Drinking plenty of water after your session will help you feel refreshed.

Who Benefits from Reflexology?

You don't need to have a particular concern to enjoy reflexology. It can be a good choice when you simply feel like you need to slow down and recharge.

You may especially enjoy foot and hand reflexology if you:

  • Spend long hours standing or walking
  • Work extensively with your hands or at a computer
  • Carry everyday tension and have difficulty switching off
  • Want a relaxing wellness treatment without a traditional full-body massage
  • Prefer focused bodywork that doesn't require changing clothes

Reflexology can be enjoyed as a standalone wellness experience or incorporated into a larger day of relaxation at Blondie's Salon & Spa.

Who should avoid reflexology?

You might want to skip reflexology if you have certain foot injuries or circulatory issues. Do not get a session if you have active blood clots or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). You should also avoid it if you have unhealed foot fractures, active gout, or athlete's foot. When it doubt, check with your physician before booking.

Is it safe during pregnancy?

Reflexology is excellent for easing pregnancy stress, morning sickness, and swollen ankles and it's safe for most healthy pregnancies, but you should always discuss with your doctor or midwife first. Be sure to let us know that you are expecting and how far along you are when booking so that we can make the necessary adjustments.

More Than a Hand & Foot Massage

Although the feet receive focused attention during reflexology, the experience is different from simply having tired feet rubbed.

Reflexology uses intentional pressure on specific points of the feet and hands. The pace, pressure and sequence of the session are designed to encourage an overall sense of relaxation rather than simply working sore muscles.

Many people are surprised by how calming such a focused treatment can feel. When your body has been running on high alert, slowing down and concentrating attention on just the hands and feet can provide an opportunity for the rest of you to become still as well.
